Ballet's Greatest Love Story 'Swan Lake' Comes To The Southport Theatre

After sell-out performances last year, the Russian State Ballet and Opera House comes to Southport this November as part of its annual UK tour with spellbinding, lavish, full-production touring ballet. This year they are bringing to you the Mariisky State Ballet Theatre from central Russia. One hundred and thirty-five years ago audiences heard Swan Lake by the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for the very first time. From that moment on, the world of ballet would never be the same.

Swan Lake is a tale of two young women, Odette and Odile, who resemble each other so strikingly that one can easily be mistaken for the other. It is the compelling legend of a tragic romance in which a princess, Odette, is turned into a swan by an evil curse. Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful young woman he is instantly captivated – will his love prove strong enough to break the evil spell that she is under? From the opulent splendour of the palace ballroom to the moonlit lake where majestic swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all.

Over the last 10 years, The Russian State Ballet and Opera House has brought you over 22 tours by various Russian artists ranging from folk-lore to ballet and opera. Over the same period, they have performed on more than 850 occasions, covering over 100 different regional theatres in the UK. Most importantly more than 350,000 people have come to see their shows.

Chief Executive Alexej Ignatow says "In various interviews over the years I have always said that part of the enjoyment is in presenting these incredible shows not only in London and other major cities, but to regional audiences around the country. Not everyone has the ability or resources to travel to bigger theatres and experience live opera or ballet, so we try to solve this by coming directly to you. From 2012 we have been successfully bringing opera and ballet productions with a live orchestra to theatres which have not experienced live music for many years on that scale before. It has been a great challenge; however, over the last couple of years we have noticed that it is now the norm for these audiences to listen to live orchestras and I am sure none of you would like to have it any other way."

"The Russian State Ballet and Opera House was created to present ballet and opera with the highest quality and passion. Our logo symbolises high quality productions and we hope you will be part (if not already) of our growing family!"

Featuring live Orchestra with over 30 musicians, Music by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky

‘This was an absolute sumptuous ballet with the most gorgeous sets and costumes I have seen in years.’ The Central Fife Times.

Swan Lake captures, like no other ballet, the full range of human emotions – from hope to despair, from terror to tenderness, from melancholy to ecstasy. A wonderful evening out, the memories of which you will cherish long after the final curtain falls.
